Esperanza Rising-Pam Munoz Ryan

In Esperanza Rising, Pam Munoz Ryan tells the story of Esperanza Ortega, only daughter of a wealthy Mexican landowner and his wife. The story begins in 1924 in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on El Rancho de las Rosas, the ranch where Esperanza's father cultivates grapes and raises cattle. The day before Esperanza turns twelve, her dad is killed by bandits, and the her life of wealth, privilege, and security is shattered. Esperanza and her mother leave Aguascalientes with the people who were previously their servants and travel by train to California. There they find work on a company farm, picking and packing produce. Esperanza and her extended family struggle through the hardships of the Depression.
In this book, the Spanish phrase increases the level of reality in the story, and Ryan is always careful to translate the phrases so that even someone who does not speak Spanish may easily comprehend. This book is a good choice for anyone interested in the Depression-era United States, the change in fortunes of immigrants from Mexico to the US or the life of migrant workers in the past and present however it's not an interesting choice to read when you're reading books.

TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY - Jay Asher

A friend of a mine recommended this book to me and, at first, I wasn't at all interested but when I saw it in the bookstore, I thought, "why not?" I soon learned that it's an amazing book. I love it :)

Owl Island, by Randy Sue Coburn

I bought the book Owl Island at the airport of Hue to fly back to Ho Chi Minh, almost half a year before summer finally arrived. The first reason I bought it was because there was a quotation of a person who said that this book could make a person see 'love' in a whole new way. I never took interest love fictions. However the reason I bought it was because I wanted to have something to read, and it was also the only English book I could find. I read the first few chapters of the book right after I bought it, but alerady became bored of it. I wondered how a person could compliment a book this 'boring', because almost nothing happened in the beginning of it; so I immediatly stopped as my step-father would have told me to. "If you don't like a book, don't read it."

By the time summer finally arrived, my Oxford ASA summer program, and I needed a book to read; I had to take the plane for more than 15 hours. I wanted to buy a couple of books before leaving, but I did not think about it until the last minute, and all the other books I had were already read, except Owl Island. Was that book following me, or something? But I guess I had no other choice, so I tucked it in my carry on bag anyway.

As time was flying by, Phoebe's wounds were recovering from the last time she ever heard from Mitchell ever since the car accident on one barbecue night that she organized so perfectly. Life on Owl Island was beginning to finally flow after more than 15 years of replaying old memories of her a Mitchell almost everytime she thought of him, from the first time she met him to the accident who left a permanent print on her world. The barbecue night was suppose to be perfect as her barbecues had always been. There was to be no disturbance that were going to make her reach the cigarettes she smoked from time to time everytime things bothered her before an unexpected guest who just moved on the island, happened to be her formal lover who she bitterly lost, by the name of Whit Taynor.

Whit Taynor was a movie director with who she grew up, listening to his voice on the radio before his big career as a director. He was already part of her life when she was a teenager; he was her first love and she was his fairy girl. When Phoebe and Whit finally met, they became star crossed lover and had once plan that they were going to make 'their' first movie together about Kiki de Montparnasse. This movie was meant to be a big hit, showing off all the love and effort they put together into it but it all changed in so fast that there was no starting place to describe the struggles she had been through.

Now memories of her and Whit were starting to replay in her mind. Her feelings were shifting from left to right. From Whit to Mitchell. Did she really still like Whit she wondered? But either way there was not going to be any hope for her because that time when she met Whit again, he was already married. However, Whit never was the most truthful man on Earth, despite his charms.

As I read this book, I was reading the first mistakes she's already made but also the mistakes she was making again because of her feelings being so confused. At first, I told myself that it was ridiculous for her to fall for Whit once again if he had once opened a wound in her heart. I expected for her not to do the same mistakes again. But Owl Island's chapters were like puzzles pieces mixed together. Each chapters were like different stories that linked to the reason why she was confused.

Deception Point by Dan brown

Deception Point by Dan Brown is a thrilling, sci-fi/detective book. Deception Point is the story of a mysterious meteorite. A group of scientist are assigned to find out more, but what they discover is what they would never suspect.
The book really does take you for a ride, leading you on and then surprising you with a twist on every corner.
I found this book to be very real, as everything is surported with facts and it's clear the author, Dan Brown has done his research. What make this book so interesting is that all of the events are possible which makes you really think hard about the 'What If's'.
I really enjoyed this book and found it 'Un-putdownable' and if your looking for a interesting, thrilling and surprising novel i suggest this book.

Percy Jackson , The Lighting Thief

It is a book about a boy named Percy Jackson who finds out that he is a demigod, half god, half human. He gets taken to a camp where everyone is a demigod. He gets educated in the history of gods and finds out that the big three, Zeus, Poisedon and Hades made a pact to never have children again as their children had such powers that it would be dangerous to the world for them to exist. He goes through training and finds that he is an exceptional swordsman. Demigods are put into different cabins according to their parents ( on the god side). No god claimed Percy for a few weeks when one night after making a river rise up and attack an opponent. That night when he made his offerings to the gods a trident formed out of smoke then evapourated. He was a son of Poisedon. One of the big three. He is then accused of helping his father steal Zeus' lighting bolt. He leads a quest into the under world to propve his innocence. This novel was very gripping and exciting as I like fantasy. It was also very informative and taught me a lot about the Greek gods. I would recommend this book to everyone who likes fanasty. I found the book so brilliant and full of cliff hangers that I read it for 2 days straight until I had finished it. Once it was finished I went out and bought the sequel!

Naked Prey- John Sandford

Okay, well I was pretty bored of reading teen books during the summer, so I decided to try out a crime thriller instead. And obviously, this is the one I chose.

The book revolves around a detective named Lucas Davenport, who is sent to Custer County after a black man and white woman are hanged from a tree. Everyone is jumping to the conclusion that the couple were lynched, but as Davenport soon discovers, there's far more to the story than meets the eye.

Enter Loren Singleton, an eccentric Cadillac-obsessed local of Custer County, who at first seems to be only a slightly shady car-repair expert, but quickly evolves into a far more sinister character. Another intriguing role in the novel is that of Letty West, the spunky 12 year old that found the hanged bodies of Jane Warr and Deon Cash. She aids Davenport and his sidekick, Del Capslock, several times throughout the novel and there's a pleasant twist in store for her at the end.

This is a complex story about drug operations, kidnapping, serial murder and ace sleuthing. But the one thing it DOESN'T focus too much on is love. Given today's circumstances, where love is the centre of almost every book or movie, I found this to be a fantastic refresher from what I consider irritatingly predictable.

9/10. Epic!! :)

Aladdin

Aladdin is a character where his whole life change because of one single moment, he was lured into stealing the treasure for a disguised Jafar who is trying to take over the kingdom with the magic lamp! Aladdin was dumb enough to believe that he would actually give the treasure to him, bu the only reason why Jafar wanted Aladdin was because the oracle that Jafar has told him that Aladdin is the only one who could go in to that cave and get the lamp for him. So Jafar makes a deal woth him saying that he could keep the treasures if he handed him the lamp. This story gives an overview of how a persons greed can lead to disasters. Aladdin get the lamp as he finds out that Jafar was only using him, at first he uses the lamp for his own benefit but at the end he realizes that he cannot wish for happiness, but has to make his happiness for himself. So he set the jeeny~~free~~~~~
So as a result it shows that how a life can change by one decision you make for youself?.................................
This story was same as all others, one: be honest, two: be honest three: be honest

Dune by Frank Herbert

I finished this book during the weeks of July. The vivid description, imagery, similes and metaphors greatly enlightened and influenced me.

The story of Dune is set on the desert world of Arrakis, where the only source of 'spice' melange is located in the known universe, the most valuable substance in the galaxy, known to enhance people's senses and in so doing, create super computer human, who are called Mentats. The story tells the struggle betwenn the Noble Houses of Altreides, Harkonnen and the Empire, ruled by Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, as they fight against each other for the control of Arrakis. The protangonist, the heir to House Altreides, Paul, who bears a great destiny, is borned during these troubled time.

Throughout the novel, ecology has been an essential addition to the details. With his amazig uses of literary devices, Herbert has managed to describe the complexity of Arrakis's desert wildlife. From giant sandworms to water creatures and even to the desert People of Fremen, whose will forge an alliance with Paul.

The novel also portrays the decline of the Empire, due to its over-confidence and arrogant nature. This is proved during the battles on Arrakis against the Fremen where the Emperor's Saudaukar are little match for the Fremen of Dune.

The birth of a hero Paul is also a major aspect of the novel. Though Paul rises into a super natural status, he begins his path to become a hero just by training himself for the problems in front of him.

In conclusion, with such a beuatiful creation of a unique world, Frank Herbert has managed to capture the reader's mind and attention. Thus I would rate this book 10/10.

1984 George Orwell

1984 is about the terror of the Socialist Party during Orwell's time. I think this book very accurately describes how the Socialist Party manipulated and kept in power using confusion among hte people. In this book, the world will be divided into 3 super nations, Oceania, Eastasia nad Eurasia. Winston Smith, the protagonist, lives in London of Airstrip 1, an alternative name for Britain. We see the world in his point of view about how the government, or the Ministry of Peace, is leaving the people in confusion and ignorance through propaganda and Party slogans. The peolpe are manipulated into beleving everything the Party tells them to. The government is split into 4 differnt sections, The Ministry if Peace, Ministry of Truth, Ministry of Plenty and MInistry of Love. The leader of Oceania is called "Big Brother" and the Party's motto or slogan is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" which keeps the people from doing anything the Party does not want them to do, such as thinking and rebelling. I think that Orwell was trying to tell us that if the Socialist Party took over the world, it would be like the description in 1984.

Animal Farm by George Owell

Animal Farm is a novel written by George Owell. It is a novel that made plain old farm animals to greedy and warring. George Owell's imagination had put human intelegence into all the animals in a farm. He wrote this book to symbolise the Russian Revolution. He chose the farmer to be the last Tsar in Russia. It symbolises that the man who was overtaken by the pigs.

This novel is very good because it defines what greed can lead to and the revolution was explained throughout the novel by just using animals. I think that this book is realy good because every prop or character in the novel is carefully named, placed (when and where in the novel), and described to represent main events in the revolution.

George Owell alo builds up the tension very well. At he beggining everyone was near to equal but int he near end it was only a few of the pigs who ruled the place with some other farmers. This automaticaly shows what greed can cause.

Also through out the novel, a lot of live were taken away because of war and the unresponsible orders from the pigs (boss of the farm). Later on the stroy, the pigs are growing more and more like men treated the other farm animals like men would.

I would give this 7.5 out of ten because to me, this genre of book i dont realy have that much interest in but this novel can score 7.5 on me is realy good. I suggest to you to read this great novel if you havnt already read it. Please Leave a Comment :) It has 122 pages and can be borrowed at school

Lock and Key -Sarah Dessen

This summer, I recently finished reading a novel that really changed my outlook on life in general. So, here it is:

A seventeen-year-old girl named Ruby Cooper had been abandoned by her mother a few months before graduation, forcing her older sister to take her in and live with her family. This sister was the same one that had disappeared 10 years before, and Ruby has to find ways to adapt to her drastically improved lifestyle. Over the course of the story, she learns from the people surrounding her, finally realizing that in life, we have to accept help, as well as give it back. This realization, then, is put to the test when she unearths a dark secret about Nate, her next door neighbour.

I found myself drawn to the novel instantly when browsed it, and the more I read, the more hooked I got. In my opinion, it is a well-crafted, beautiful, and
