Okay, well I was pretty bored of reading teen books during the summer, so I decided to try out a crime thriller instead. And obviously, this is the one I chose.
The book revolves around a detective named Lucas Davenport, who is sent to Custer County after a black man and white woman are hanged from a tree. Everyone is jumping to the conclusion that the couple were lynched, but as Davenport soon discovers, there's far more to the story than meets the eye.
Enter Loren Singleton, an eccentric Cadillac-obsessed local of Custer County, who at first seems to be only a slightly shady car-repair expert, but quickly evolves into a far more sinister character. Another intriguing role in the novel is that of Letty West, the spunky 12 year old that found the hanged bodies of Jane Warr and Deon Cash. She aids Davenport and his sidekick, Del Capslock, several times throughout the novel and there's a pleasant twist in store for her at the end.
This is a complex story about drug operations, kidnapping, serial murder and ace sleuthing. But the one thing it DOESN'T focus too much on is love. Given today's circumstances, where love is the centre of almost every book or movie, I found this to be a fantastic refresher from what I consider irritatingly predictable.
9/10. Epic!! :)
